Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Purpose

Littera Scripta is committed to maintaining the highest standards of research integrity, transparency, and academic publishing. This policy outlines the journal’s expectations regarding the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools during the preparation, submission, peer review, and editorial processing of manuscripts.

This policy applies to all authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial staff.

AI Tools Covered by This Policy

This policy applies to generative AI tools capable of producing text, images, computer code, data analyses, or other content, including but not limited to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and similar technologies.

Authorship

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of a manuscript.

Authorship requires substantial intellectual contribution, accountability for the accuracy and integrity of the work, approval of the final manuscript, and responsibility for responding to questions regarding the published research. These responsibilities can only be fulfilled by human authors.

Acceptable Uses of AI

Authors may use generative AI tools for limited purposes, including:

  • improving grammar, spelling, and language clarity;
  • enhancing readability;
  • translating non-scientific text;
  • assisting with computer programming or code debugging;
  • brainstorming ideas;
  • organizing or formatting content.

The use of AI must not replace the authors’ own scientific, analytical, or intellectual contributions.

Unacceptable Uses of AI

The following practices are prohibited:

  • generating or fabricating research data;
  • creating false or misleading results;
  • inventing citations or references;
  • generating fictitious experiments or analyses;
  • manipulating research findings;
  • producing entire manuscripts without substantial human contribution;
  • using AI to impersonate reviewers or editorial decisions.

Any misuse of AI may be treated as research misconduct.

Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose any use of generative AI during the preparation of their manuscript.

An AI Use Statement must be included before the References section.

If AI was used

AI Use Statement: During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [Name of AI Tool] solely for [e.g., language editing, grammar improvement, code assistance, or formatting]. All scientific content, analysis, interpretation, and conclusions were developed, verified, and approved by the authors, who accept full responsibility for the final manuscript.

If AI was not used

AI Use Statement: The authors declare that no generative artificial intelligence tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.

Responsibility of Authors

Regardless of whether AI tools were used, authors remain fully responsible for:

  • the originality of the manuscript;
  • the accuracy of all information;
  • the validity of research methods;
  • data analysis and interpretation;
  • citations and references;
  • compliance with ethical standards;
  • the conclusions presented in the manuscript.

The use of AI does not transfer responsibility from the authors.

Confidentiality and Data Protection

Authors should not upload confidential, proprietary, unpublished, copyrighted, or sensitive research materials into publicly available AI systems unless they have obtained appropriate permission and such use complies with applicable laws and institutional policies.

Use of AI by Reviewers

Peer reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts.

Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, figures, tables, supplementary files, or reviewer reports into publicly accessible AI tools, as doing so may compromise confidentiality and intellectual property.

Peer-review reports must represent the independent professional judgment of the reviewer.

Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use AI tools only for limited administrative purposes, such as:

  • identifying formatting inconsistencies;
  • checking language quality;
  • verifying metadata completeness;
  • supporting editorial workflow.

AI tools will not be used to make editorial decisions regarding acceptance, revision, or rejection. Final editorial decisions remain the sole responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team.

Investigation of Undisclosed AI Use

If undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI is suspected, the journal reserves the right to investigate.

Editors may request additional documentation, including original data, draft versions, source files, coding scripts, or explanations regarding manuscript preparation.

Failure to provide satisfactory information may result in rejection, correction, retraction, or other editorial action in accordance with the journal’s Publication Ethics Policy.

Policy Review

Littera Scripta will periodically review and update this policy to reflect developments in generative AI technologies, publishing ethics, and international best practices.

Contact

Questions regarding this policy should be directed to the editorial office through the contact information provided on the journal’s website.
